Alex Song has rated Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger the 'best manager in the world' as his side push for long-awaited silverware this season.

The Gunners' season was dealt a blow last weekend when they lost out on the Carling Cup to Birmingham at Wembley, while they also suffered a setback to their Premier League ambitions after they could only manage a goalless draw at home to Sunderland on Saturday.

However, the North Londoners are still competing for trophies on three fronts under Wenger this season, and defensive midfielder Song insists there is no one he would rather work under are they look to bring success to Emirates Stadium.

Cameroonian Song told The News of the World: "Arsene Wenger has told us this current squad is the best generation he has ever had and when he tells you that it makes you want to give even more, to repay his faith.

"He is the best manager in the world and those words have given us a huge lift. We want to show him they are true."

Much has been made of Arsenal's six-year trophy doubt, with Wenger's men having failed to secure silverware since the 2005 FA Cup, when they were still based at former home Highbury.

Song feels he and his team-mates should take inspiration from Wenger's 'Invincibles' of the 2003-04 season, who went the entire Premier League campaign unbeaten to lift the trophy.

Song said: "The generation of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Vieira and co created history at Arsenal.

"I used to watch them on TV and wanted to be like them. Now, despite Sunday's defeat, we can take inspiration from them to try and create our own piece of history.

"What the 2004 team did will never be forgotten. That was one of the best Arsenal teams ever."

Treble

Despite the Gunners' Carling Cup heartache, Song insists a Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FA Cup treble is not beyond their reach.

"Of course it's still possible," he added.

"If we didn't think that we wouldn't bother going onto the pitch, we would just stay at home!

"We are all gutted by the Carling Cup Final defeat, but now we give everything."
