The 29-year-old shot-stopper was understood to be close to making the move to South Wales but the deal is now off because he is reportedly unwell.

Bluebirds boss Dave Jones was keen to add to his ranks as No.1 Tom Heaton has recently suffered a groin injury and David Marshall requires surgery on his elbow.

Kirkland is no longer first choice at the DW Stadium but Latics coach Martinez has revealed the move will not go through.

"The deal won't be going ahead. Kirkland is staying at Wigan," he said.

Championship promotion challengers Cardiff are hoping Heaton will beat his injury in time to take on Ipswich this weekend.

Their third-choice keeper Jordan Santiago is also struggling because of a broken finger.
