Palermo's Uruguayan forward Abel Hernandez has spoken of his horror after he was robbed at gunpoint while returning from training.
Hernandez was sitting in his car after training with the Serie A club on Wednesday evening when he was approached by a man in his 20s armed with a pistol.
The man threatened Hernandez, 20, by putting the gun in his mouth and robbed him of a watch and a pair of earrings.
The 20-year-old has thanked his family and fellow team-mates for their support following the incident.
"Those were terrible moments," explained Hernandez. "It happened at around 6pm just after training as I was going home alone.
"Last night was an awful night. Thankfully my parents are here in Palermo with me and they could look after me.
"Their presence here is really vital at this time. I want to thank the club as well for comforting me, and my friends and team-mates.
"(Javier) Pastore came straight over after a few minutes. (Dorin) Goian, (Mattia) Cassani, (Ezequiel) Munoz, (Fabrizio) Miccoli and all the others called me straight away. At this time they're very important to me."
Not deterred
Hernandez insists the robbery has not put him off playing for the club or living on the island of Sicily and he is now hoping to return to action sooner rather than later.
"I'm happy at Palermo, I've never had any problems with the city, this is just one regrettable incident," he continued.
"The public have shown me a lot of solidarity and I thank them for that. Now I just want to get back onto the pitch and play.
"I'm thinking about the match against Bologna which is crucial for our league campaign.
"I'm not thinking about leaving, as someone said. I just want to put this horrible episode behind me."
