Michael Ballack will discover the fate of his international career next month after being left out of the current German national squad.
The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder, who had not played since September, made his return from a fracture to his leg in Friday's 2-0 win over Hannover.
However, the comeback was not enough to secure the 34-year-old's place in Joachim Low's Germany squad to face Italy on Wednesday.
"We all know that Michael was still missing something after he played his first 90 minutes following a long injury," Low told German daily Bild.
"He is still finding his rhythm and he has made a good impression. If everything runs accordingly, we will meet in the middle of March to look at what the next step is."
Ballack is two appearances shy of reaching a century of caps for his country, scoring 42 goals over a 12-year period, and Bayern Munich defender Philipp Lahm will captain Germany in his absence.
