The Scotland international is out of contract in the summer and so far lengthy negotiations over a new Pride Park deal have failed to bear fruit.

Gers are believed to be looking to secure his signature on a pre-contract enabling them to complete a free transfer at the end of the season.

Smith is keen to bolster his numbers and is a huge fan of Commons, although he remains in the dark whether the club will land their man.

Interest

"He's someone we are interested in trying to get," confirmed Smith.

"We've made an enquiry and we are in talks with Derby to see what the situation is."

Smith last week revealed that he was on the look-out for two loan deals following the departure of Kenny Miller to Bursaspor.
