Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine has confirmed making an enquiry for Notts County striker Lee Hughes.

The veteran front-man has chipped in with 10 goals this season and has scored 43 goals in 62 appearances in all for the Magpies since his 2009 arrival from Oldham Athletic.

Irvine is keen to add further goals to his squad after signing Gary Madine from Carlisle United last weekend and made an approach for Hughes.

However, the Magpies rejected his enquiry and Irvine is unlikely to make a fresh bid unless the Owls' League One rivals soften their stance.

"We have made an enquiry about Lee Hughes but that is as far as it has gone," said Irvine in the Nottingham Evening Post.

"We asked Notts County and we were told that he was not available, so that is probably it as far as I'm concerned unless they come back and say they have changed their mind.

"Lee has got quality and is a goalscorer. His record this year is very good and it has been throughout his career."
