A number of clubs, including Blackpool, Wigan, Cardiff and Nottingham Forest, have all been linked with the former Liverpool youngster, but it appears Wolves are in pole position to land Hammill.

Hammill has been one of the outstanding performers in the Championship this season with a number of eye-catching displays for Barnsley.

Barnsley have been resigned to losing the 22-year-old with the skilful winger thought to have a £500,000 release clause in his contract at Oakwell.

Wolves are now thought to have reached the buy-out clause and have been given permission to hold talks with the player.

Mick McCarthy is a big admirer of Hammill and he is keen to tie up a deal for the player by the end of the week in time for the player to be available to face his former club Liverpool this weekend.
