Dann suffered a serious hamstring problem during his side's Carling Cup semi-final defeat to West Ham in midweek.
Scans have shown the full extent of the problem with the highly-rated defender now set to go under the knife to correct the injury.
The injury is likely to sideline Dann for up to four months and the news is a major blow for Birmingham as they battle to avoid relegation.
Dann has established himself as one of the best young defenders in the country since joining from Coventry in the summer of 2009 and his performances at St Andrews have attracted the interest of a number of top clubs.
In his absence, Liam Ridgewell is likely to play alongside Roger Johnson in the heart of the defence, with David Murphy coming into the side at left-back.
However, Dann's injury could force Blues boss Alex McLeish into the transfer market to bolster his defensive options before the close of the window.
