Juventus have signed Luca Toni on a free from Genoa to replace crocked striker Fabio Quagliarella.

Bianconeri bring in veteran after Quagliarella ruled out for season

Juventus have confirmed the signing of former Italy striker Luca Toni on a free transfer. The 33-year-old joins the Italian giants from Genoa on an 18-month deal having scored just three goals in 16 games for the Rossoblu this season after being released by Bayern Munich last summer. The former Fiorentina and Palermo forward scored 16 goals in 47 appearances for Italy and was a member of their 2006 World Cup-winning squad. "I arrive with a lot of enthusiasm and I am ready to put myself at the coach's disposal," Toni told the club's official website. "I feel good physically and I have a big will to win and continue scoring goals, as I have done throughout my career."

Toni has been signed as cover for Fabio Quagliarella, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a cruciate ligament injury. The 27-year-old striker, on loan from Napoli, suffered the injury to his right knee in Thursday's 4-1 home defeat by Parma, which left Juve fifth in Serie A and eight points behind leaders AC Milan. Quagliarella underwent scans on Friday to confirm the extent of the damage and he is set to undergo surgery in the next few days, which will sideline the Italy international for around six months. He is, however, still an integral part of Juve's plans for the future and sporting director Giuseppe Marotta has been quick to point out that Toni has not been signed as a replacement. "He's here to improve our attacking strength," he said. "Unfortunately Quagliarella will be out for many months and we are also without [Vincenzo] Iaquinta at the moment."

Meanwhile, Felipe Melo has been hit with a three-match ban after being sent off early on in Thursday's defeat. The Brazil international was dismissed after kicking out towards the face of Parma player Massimo Paci. The 27-year-old midfielder will miss the league games against Napoli, Bari and Sampdoria.
