Darren Ambrose insists it would be no surprise if caretaker boss Dougie Freedman landed the Crystal Palace job on a permanent basis.
The 36-year-old Palace legend took caretaker charge for the crucial 1-0 home win over fellow relegation strugglers Preston on Monday.
Palace midfielder Ambrose believes Freedman, who made more than 350 appearances and scored more than 100 goals for the Eagles, enjoys the respect of the squad as the club look to appoint a successor to George Burley, who was sacked on New Year's Day.
Ambrose told the
South London Press: "Dougie's come in and brought his own message to the team.
"There would be no surprise in the camp if Dougie was appointed manager - he has got a lot of respect from the lads."
Bournemouth Eddie Howe is the red-hot favourite to land the job, while another Palace legend, Steve Coppell, has also been linked to the post, as has former QPR, Swansea and Leicester boss Paolo Sousa.
Despite the win over Preston, the Eagles remain in the Championship's bottom three, a point from safety.
