Championship strugglers Preston sacked Darren Ferguson last week and have been sifting through the candidates for the vacancy.

Brown, who left Hull last season, has been tipped for the position and it is understood that he has spoken to the Preston hierarchy regarding the role.

He was recently linked with the job at SPL side Aberdeen and has also been mooted as a contender for the post at Preston's local rivals Burnley.

Meanwhile, Preston midfielder Barry Nicholson believes it is important that the club make a swift decision regarding Ferguson's replacement.

Busy period

Nicholson told the Evening Post: "One way or another it needs sorting quickly because of our league position.

"I'm sure it will be - the quicker the new manager is in place the longer he has to get working with us and try and turn things round.

"As a group of players, we've not really got involved with what has been happening behind the scenes.

"We've just had a busy period of games close together and that is what we have been concentrating on."
