Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp believes Steven Pienaar would be a 'great free transfer' and is keeping a watching brief on the midfielder's situation at Everton.
Pienaar is out of contract at Goodison Park at the end of the season and has yet to make a decision regarding his long-term future.
Spurs have long been linked with a bid for the South Africa international and Redknapp confirmed he is keeping tabs on the 28-year-old.
Redknapp takes his team to Everton on Wednesday evening and appeared to indicate an interest in signing Pienaar.
However, the Spurs boss did not comment on whether his club would try to sign Pienaar in the January transfer window or wait until the end of the season.
"If he doesn't sign a contract he'll be a great free transfer for someone at the end of the year, if he doesn't stay at Everton," said Redknapp at his pre-match press conference.
"He still belongs to Everton, so it's a difficult one.
"They are still trying to keep him. We'll wait and see what happens."
