Kilmarnock's approach to extend Ben Gordon's loan for the rest of the season has been turned down by Chelsea.
Gordon has impressed during the first half of the SPL season at Kilmarnock and was keen to stay at Rugby Park.
However, Chelsea have rejected Killie's request and the 19-year-old full-back will return to Stamford Bridge after Monday's game against St Mirren.
"Ben plays his last game on Monday and then goes back to Chelsea," said assistant manager Kenny Shiels.
"The feedback we're getting is that they want to have him closer to London where they can monitor his progress, and maybe a southern club in the Championship or wherever."
Shiels added: "Ben and Chelsea have commended the manager (Mixu Paatelainen) in how well Ben has progressed in his short time here.
"It's been a great five months for Ben in terms of his development. We feel we have been good for Ben and Ben has been good for us.
"It's the end of a chapter where everyone has benefited and we have to kick on now without Ben. It's unfortunate, because he has been very good for us."
