Bordeaux president Jean-Louis Triaud has admitted Alou Diarra could be close to joining Manchester City despite no approach being made as yet.
Diarra has established a reputation as one of Europe's most effective defensive midfielders over the past couple of seasons and has regularly been linked with a move elsewhere.
He has always previously been happy to stay at the Stade Chaban-Delmas but reports suggest City could prise him away in January.
Triaud maintains that there has been no contact between the two clubs, although he accepts that it would be wrong to dismiss the speculation.
"We have not had any approach from them to now," said Triaud in an interview in France.
"But this does not mean they are not close to the player.
"But I would just like to reiterate the market begins in a week and by then, the rumours will multiply. As usual."
It is thought a bid of around £7million would be good enough to land the signature of the 29-year-old, who spent two seasons at Liverpool earlier in his career without playing a single first-team game.
