Black Cats striker hails the qualities of uncompromising centre-half

Danny Welbeck has hailed the qualities of team-mate John Mensah, branding the defender an 'animal'. The Ghanaian centre-half, who is taking in a second season on loan at Sunderland from Lyon, has to be handled with care as niggling knocks have taken their toll down the years. He is, however, a class act and has not looked out of place during his time in the Premier League. His no-nonsense approach has made him something of a cult hero on Wearside, with colleagues and supporters aware of what he brings to the side. Fellow loan star Welbeck is one of those happy to sing his praises, with the Manchester United striker of the opinion that Mensah is a defensive colossus.

Nightmare

He told the Sunderland Echo: "John Mensah has been absolute quality in the last two games. "Nothing's got past him at all. He's helping to keep the defence nice and tidy and strong, so it's up to us attackers to build on that and get the goals. "Whenever we pick the teams for training, everyone wants to be on John Mensah's side. I've played against him a few times and it's a nightmare, so goodness knows what it must be like to play against him in a match. "When he hits you, you know you've been hit. He's a big guy and he's fast. He's an animal really."
