Man of the match Jordan Henderson was delighted with Sunderland's first win in three matches following their 1-0 victory against West Ham.
The local boy bagged his first goal of the season to claim all three points on a cold afternoon at the Stadium of Light.
The 20-year-old England international was pleased to have snatched a hard-fought win and is now looking to add more goals to his game.
He told Sky Sports: "It's been a long time since I scored.
"I've been working on my finishing in training and it paid off today.
"I think the manager does want me to score more from midfield, so that was good, but the main thing was the performance and the points.
"I've been disappointed with the way I've played over the last couple of weeks
so it was good to put it right today."
Meanwhile, defender Anton Ferdinand was happy to have kept a clean sheet and is looking forward to next week's meeting with Fulham.
He said: "The clean sheet was pleasing but the main concern was getting the points and a good team performance.
"The three strikers worked hard for the team, we all do, and we showed that today.
"As a team and a group we're taking it as it comes. We've got Fulham next week and will concentrate on that."
