Rod Fanni's agent has revealed that talks are set to be held regarding a potential move to Marseille.
Reports on Monday suggested that the reigning Ligue 1 champions had identified the Rennes full-back as a January transfer target.
They are keen to find cover for the injured Cesar Azpilicueta and feel France international Fanni would be an ideal choice.
The 28-year-old is under contract with Rennes until 2012, but Marseille hope an agreement can still be reached.
They are set to meet with Fanni's representatives on Wednesday, with Dominique Six confirming that discussions are about to be opened.
"I had to verify some things first, but I can say that there is interest from Marseille," the defender's agent told L'Equipe.
"It is something both clubs are open to. I will be in Marseille on Wednesday for their match against Rennes and we will hold talks then.
"Rod is from the region surrounding Marseille, so a move is very attractive to him.
"He would also be a good signing for Marseille as he can play at full-back or at centre-half."
Rennes coach Frederic Antonetti admits there is little he can do to prevent Fanni from leaving should he accept the terms on offer at Marseille.
"I am expecting him to leave," he said.
"I don't have the means to challenge anything. Losing a player like this is never good news."
