Laurent Blanc says Eric Abidal deserves his international recall, but feels Karim Benzema still needs games.
The France coach has opted to bring Barcelona full-back Abidal back into the fold for the first time since Les Bleus' disastrous showing at the 2010 World Cup.
The 31-year-old was not among those sanctioned for the strike which marred France's time in South Africa, but he did pay the price for the country's abject failure.
He has, however, been able to hold down a regular role at Barca this season and Blanc believes that proves what a high calibre player he is.
"Abidal has been recalled to play at left full-back," said Blanc.
"He has played very often recently and to become a regular at a club like Barcelona is no mean feat.
"He is still a player who can play a major part in the French starting XI."
While Abidal has earned his place with regular football in Spain, one man who can consider himself slightly fortunate to be handed a call is Benzema.
The 22-year-old forward continues to find himself on the fringes of Jose Mourinho's plans at Real Madrid and Blanc admits that were he blessed with more attacking options, Benzema would struggle to justify a place in the squad.
"If you consider the number of goals he has scored for France in the number of appearances he has made, he has to be involved," said the national coach.
"However, his time on the pitch at Real has not increased. We have to be satisfied that he is playing a few games, but it is too few.
"If there was a lot of competition for a place, he would have a problem."
