Former Everton and Arsenal striker Francis Jeffers has flown to Australia ahead of a possible 10-week guest stint at Newcastle Jets.
The 29-year-old 'Fox in the Box' arrived Down Under last weekend and is being assessed by head coach Branko Culina.
Culina expects to make a decision on Jeffers - who is a free agent after being released by Sheffield Wednesday in May - within the next couple of days.
He said: "You can see he has got a better touch than the average player but his fitness is a fair bit off, but you can only help that if you are training I suppose.
"But we will make a decision on him in the next couple of days. We don't want to keep him here for too long if we don't sign him."
Jeffers' trial with the club comes as skipper Michael Bridges is sidelined for another two months with a knee injury and New Zealand international Jeremy Brockie is also injured.
While the Jets are in dire need of a proven goalscorer, Culina admits the club would have to change their style of play to accommodate Jeffers.
He added: "Looking at him he is not a target man, and it would require us to change our style of play, but if it meant scoring goals then I would be prepared to do that.
"But it is a big outlay so we have to feel quite confident he can do the job for us."
