Midfielder backs manager to turn things around

Middlesbrough midfielder Kevin Thomson has jumped to the defence of under-fire boss Gordon Strachan and has also played down the club's poor start to the season. The Teessiders have slipped to 18th place in the Championship table after being tipped as favourites for the title following a busy summer of transfer activity at The Riverside. Strachan's position has come under scrutiny as a result, but Thomson insists the former Celtic chief is the right man to turn things around. "It's been a wee bit frustrating not to have got better results and it's inevitable the manager will come under pressure, but we have got a great manager here," Thomson told the Evening Gazette. "I have worked under a few managers now, two or three at Hibs and probably the best at Rangers, and we have the right man for the job here. "There are those who say Gordon Strachan is not the right manager, but they should take a look in the mirror. The players are all behind him. "We will keep working hard and we know that three or four wins will send us shooting up the league."
