The Italian football federation has announced that midfielder Daniele De Rossi has been ruled out of Tuesday's Euro 2012 qualifier against Serbia due to minor injury.
A leg muscle problem means that the Roma man will not be available for the Group C match in Genoa.
De Rossi's absence will come as a frustration for coach Cesare Prandelli as the 27-year-old has been a regular member of the Italy team for the past four years.
Sampdoria's Angelo Palombo is likely to deputise for the former world champions in the game, when a win against the struggling Serbs would keep Italy top of the group.
Prandelli has said he would not be making huge changes to his side despite Friday's disappointing 0-0 draw in Northern Ireland.
