Barnsley's on-loan star gets Under 21 call

Manchester City defender Kieran Trippier has been handed his maiden England Under 21 call-up by Stuart Pearce. Pearce was on the lookout for replacements after three players pulled out of his squad, although he has call-up up just one. Head coach Pearce lost Trippier's Eastlands team-mate Micah Richards, Arsenal full-back Kieran Gibbs and Huddersfield goalkeeper Alex Smithies to injury on Monday night, ahead of the upcoming Uefa U21 Championship play-off against Romania. Trippier, 20, has yet to play a first-team match for City and is currently in his second loan spell at Barnsley. He has previously represented England U20s and was due to join the U21 squad later this afternoon at their Norwich base. Pearce's youngsters are chasing a place at next summer's European Championship finals in Denmark, with the first leg of their play-off at Carrow Road on Friday and the return game taking place in Botosani a week today.
