Adam Johnson is keen to prove he can perform on a weekly basis for Manchester City by knuckling down.
The 23-year-old winger has had an up and down start to the season having impressed for England in last month's Euro 2012 qualifiers by scoring against Bulgaria and Switzerland, but then finding himself warming the bench in the Premier League.
City boss Roberto Mancini has said the former Middlesbrough midfielder needs to work harder if he is to play week in, week out.
However Johnson boosted his plea for a regular Premier League start when he netted against Juventus in the Europa League on Thursday.
"I feel I'm playing well and I must be doing things right off the pitch if I'm doing well on it," he told The Sun.
"I just want to get back in the team now.
"I want to be playing in every game so, hopefully I'll start against Newcastle on Sunday."
Johnson was on Newcastle's books as a youngster and is relishing the prospect of facing his boyhood club.
He added: "I grew up supporting Newcastle and loving David Ginola and players like that."
