The Magpies produced a shock success at Stamford Bridge as Chris Hughton's team grabbed a late 4-3 victory over last season's Premier League and FA Cup winners.

Ameobi was the hero for Newcastle after grabbing two goals, including a 90th minute winner, but he insists that the result was a team effort.

He told The Chronicle: "It was a fabulous result for the team and for me personally to get two goals, including the late winner, which made it a very special night.

Tough

"Getting drawn away to Chelsea was about as tough a draw as you could get.

"But the spirit we have here these days showed on the night and it was sensational. I thought we fully deserved the victory."

Hughton named a much-changed side that included the likes of Shane Ferguson, Nile Ranger and Haris Vuckic.

And Ameobi was keen to praise his inexperienced team-mates, as he added: "The younger lads like Shane, Nile and Haris were superb and it was a great experience for them."
