Wigan Athletic midfielder Hendry Thomas is to undergo an X-ray after suffering a shin injury against Preston North End.
Thomas suffered a badly gashed shin during Wednesday's 2-1 Carling Cup victory after being caught by a robust tackle from Preston striker Jon Parkin.
The Honduras international was replaced by James McCarthy and Latics boss Roberto Martinez is waiting to learn if there is any further damage.
Martinez said: "That is the only worry. He has a nasty cut on his shin and it has swollen quite quickly.
"We are going to have an X-ray and check there is no further damage."
Passion and desire
Franco Di Santo and Ronnie Stam also picked up knocks after challenges from David Gray and Paul Parry respectively, which brought yellow cards for the Preston duo.
And, though, Parkin's challenge on Thomas did not warrant a booking, Martinez had no real complaints with Preston's approach.
He added: "It is part of the Carling Cup and you are not going to take it away from the game.
"In a way it shows the passion and the desire, but it is a little bit of a gamble because referees can punish it with the red card.
"Franco Di Santo and Ronnie Stam had heavy knocks, but it looks as though they are OK. I am pleased they don't look serious injuries."
