Liverpool's transfer window signing Raul Meireles is delighted to be playing alongside Steven Gerrard, a player he holds in the highest regard.
The Portuguese midfielder rates the England international as one of the world's best and believes their games are well suited.
Meireles believes Gerrard, who has spent his entire career at Anfield, is as good as the likes of Michael Essien and Andres Iniesta.
Gerrard proved his quality with a brace against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, although it was not enough to prevent Liverpool slipping to a 3-2 defeat.
"For a long time, I have said that Gerrard is one of the top three midfielders in the European game," said the 27-year-old.
"Along with Essien of Chelsea and Iniesta of Barcelona, he has been the most difficult opponent I have faced over the years.
"Now I am his team-mate. I think we can combine well together."
Former FC Porto midfielder Meireles, who hails from Portugal's second biggest city Porto, sympathises with the likes of locals Gerrard and Jamie Carragher due to the added pressure they are under.
As the pair feel the fans' passion and enthusiasm for the team, Meireles knows the players sometimes are at the forefront of the supporters' frustrations when things do not go to plan.
"I can sympathise with people like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher because, like me, they are players who have played for the major club in their city," he told LFC Weekly.
"That brings pressures that are difficult to deal with because when things go wrong, the local players sometimes feel the frustrations of the supporters a lot more."
