Germany international Michael Ballack has suffered a fracture to his shin and is expected to be out for around six weeks.
The 33-year-old limped off after 30 minutes of Bayer Leverkusen's 2-2 draw with Hanover on Saturday after a challenge from Sergio Pinto.
It was initially expected that he has suffered some ligament damage, but scans have now revealed a fracture.
The news means that Ballack will now miss Germany's forthcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers with Turkey and Kazakhstan.
"I will do what I have always done, there is no need to make any drama," he said.
Germany coach Joachim Low in a statement: "I feel very sorry for Michael that he has to deal with yet another injury.
"I wish him obviously a speedy recovery."
