Notts County boss Craig Short has dismissed reports linking the club with a move for Darius Vassell.
Reports have suggested County were closing in on an ambitious swoop for the former England international.
Vassell is available on a free transfer after leaving Turkish club Ankaragucu and he is keen to fix himself up with a new club.
Short admits he held talks with former Aston Villa ace Vassell about a possible move, but insists the 30-year-old will not be moving to Meadow Lane.
"There were talks, but nothing is going to happen there," Short told the Nottingham Evening Post.
"It was Ray (Trew, the chairman) who brought it up, but it is not going any further.
"When someone like that is a free agent you would be stupid not to talk to him.
"I think he has got one or two options now.
"I don't even think we got as far as talking about wages, but I think that would have stopped it anyway."
