Veteran to play two more seasons before taking up coaching role

Sami Hyypia will prolong his playing career by a further year after extending his contract with Bayer Leverkusen until 2012. The former Liverpool defender was due to see out his previous contract until the end of the new Bundesliga season before taking up a coaching role at the BayArena. However, the 36-year-old has been talked into a U-turn on his retirement after a convincing first season in Germany in which he has become a mainstay in Leverkusen's defence. Leverkusen believe the Finn still has two good seasons left in him and general manager Wolfgang Holzhauser is delighted by the change of heart. "We are glad that such a key player and symbol of our team like Sami has been tied down to us for a longer term," he told the club's official website. The Finland captain has made 34 appearances for Leverkusen since his move from Anfield, where he spent 10 years after joining from Willem II.
