Newcastle manager Chris Hughton is confident Steven Taylor will stay at St James' Park as negotiations over his contract continue.
The Magpies placed Taylor on the transfer list earlier this week after the two parties failed to agree terms on a new deal.
The defender, who is in the final year of his current deal, later insisted that he was happy for the talks to carry on regarding an extension, and Hughton has now confirmed discussions are ongoing.
There are just four days remaining until the transfer deadline and Hughton believes Newcastle will keep a player who is a vital component of the side.
"As always, we would prefer to keep it in-house, but it becomes very difficult these days," said Hughton.
"But discussions are ongoing. Steven is certainly a player we would like to remain at this football club.
"He is a player we value very highly and discussions are very much ongoing. We are very hopeful."
Ben Arfa and Keane
Hughton also confirmed he was hopeful of pushing through a deal for Marseille's Hatem Ben Arfa.
The French club have announced that the winger is set to fly in for talks and Hughton is now looking to tie up matters.
He said: "What I can tell you is there have been some discussions with Ben Arfa which are very much ongoing and hopefully, that's something that can be done."
Newcastle have also been linked with a move for Tottenham striker Robbie Keane but Hughton played down the reports.
"That's very much speculation at this moment in time," he said.
