Southampton are keeping tabs on Ian Harte's situation at Carlisle, skysports.com understands.
The 32-year-old has enjoyed a fine start to the new season with two goals in four games from his new central defensive role.
Contrary to reports that Harte had signed a new deal at Carlisle it is understood the 32-year-old has yet to put pen-to-paper on a contract extension and remains in talks over over a new deal.
The news has alerted Southampton who have held a long-term interest in former Leeds star Harte.
Southampton boss Alan Pardew is keen to bolster his defensive options before the close of the transfer window and Harte's versatility in that he can play in central defence or full-back makes him an attractive proposition.
Harte enjoyed a stunning season at Carlisle last term, scoring 18 goals from full-back and was rewarded with a place in the League One PFA Team of the Year and they would be reluctant to lose his services as they hope to secure him on a new contract.
