German giants tracking Samba star

Schalke manager Felix Magath has confirmed that Julio Baptista is among his summer transfer targets. The Bundesliga outfit have been linked with a £4million swoop for the Brazil international, who is currently on the books of Roma. Schalke have already underlined their ambition by snapping up Real Madrid legend Raul and hope to pair the Spaniard with his former Bernabeu team-mate Baptista. The Samba star has been linked with a host of clubs over recent months, having struggled in Italy, but Magath is hoping he can leap to the front of the queue.

Quality

"Julio Baptista is a good player," he told Rheinische Post. "The rebuilding of the club has just started. If we want to fulfil our expectation we need new quality inside the squad. We could use some more signatures. "There will be something worked out in the next 10 days, that is for sure. We definitely need to become stronger in attack." Baptista is under contract with Roma until 2012, but the Serie A outfit have admitted in the past that they are willing to listen to offers for the 28-year-old forward.
