Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton has confirmed that FC Twente's Ivory Coast international Cheick Tiote is on the club's radar.
The 24-year-old defensive midfielder is a man very much in demand and rivals West Brom have already tabled a £3million offer.
Newcastle have been tipped to sign Marseille's Hatem Ben Arfa and now Tiote has been linked with a move to St James' Park.
Hughton is aware of Tiote, but insists that nothing is imminent and that most of the names being tipped to join are paper talk.
The Newcastle boss says the club are working hard behind the scenes on new faces and that he remains hopeful of strengthening his squad.
"He is a player we are very much aware of, but as with lots of other names, they are very much speculation," confirmed Hughton.
"We are working very, very hard behind the scenes to bring in the right type of players for this football club, and we will continue to do so.
"It's not been easy, but I wouldn't be the only one that's saying that.
"We are still very, very hopeful that we will be bringing in some names before the window closes."
