Kevin Doyle will sit out Republic of Ireland's friendly against Argentina on Wednesday night after failing a fitness test.
The Wolves striker was set to start against the World Cup quarter-finalists at the Aviva Stadium, but has failed to fully recover from a calf injury sustained against Hearts at the start of August.
The-26-year-old missed his club's game against Athletic Bilbao last weekend, but manager Mick McCarthy was hopeful he could get some game time for the national team.
However, Doyle's absence has now cast serious doubt over whether he will be fit for Wolves' opening Premier League against Stoke at Molineux on Saturday.
Celtic frontman Cillian Sheridan is now the favourite to take Doyle's place by partnering Robbie Keane in attack.
The 21-year-old played in Tuesday's 5-0 win against Estonia for the Under-21s, but is now in line to win his third cap from the start.
