Skysports.com understands Bristol City are planning a late move to steal Ibrahima Sonko from under the noses of Portsmouth.
Portsmouth have agreed a season-long loan deal with Stoke for the giant defender, but the move was held up as the Championship club waited for the Football League to lift their transfer embargo.
Bristol City have joined the race for Sonko's signature and are understood to have agreed a similar season-long loan deal with Stoke.
Robins boss Steve Coppell is a big fan of the 29-year-old having worked with him during his time in charge of Reading and he is hoping to persuade Sonko to move to Ashton Gate ahead of Fratton Park.
Stoke are willing to farm out Sonko as he is well down the pecking order in Tony Pulis' plans at the Britannia Stadium.
Sonko, who has one year to to run on his contract at Stoke, now must decide what club he wants to spend next season with.
