Alex has been left behind for Friday's friendly with Ajax after suffering the problem in training.

The injury is expected to keep the Brazilian on the sidelines for at least a month meaning he miss the Premier League opener against West Brom on 14th August.

Alex joins Blues team-mate Petr Cech on the sidelines with the Czech goalkeeper ruled out for a month with a calf injury.

The injury to Alex leaves Chelsea short of cover in central defence with Ricardo Carvalho being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.
