Craig Short is hoping to bring Matt Ritchie back to Notts County after being thwarted in a bid to sign Davide Somma.
Portsmouth winger Ritchie enjoyed an impressive four-month loan spell at Meadow Lane last season and Short is keen to re-sign the youngster.
He has confirmed making an enquiry for the promising attacker and is now waiting on a response from Portsmouth.
"We're working on it," Short told the Nottingham Evening Post. "He's a player we like."
Short also revealed that he wanted to sign Leeds striker Somma on loan, but was knocked back by his Elland Road counterpart Simon Grayson.
He added: "I spoke to Grayson about Somma earlier in the summer and he said we might be able to have him.
"I rang one of the Leeds players while we have been in Austria and he told me Somma was flying in training, so I knew then we were never going to get him. Simon texted me and said they are going to keep him.
"It would have been great to get somebody like that in, a big, powerful and direct player, but we'll move onto other targets.
"We're still in the hunt for another striker, and we might go for another midfielder, a wide right player."
