Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon says that he would welcome World Cup star John Mensah back at the Stadium of Light.
The Ghana international helped his country to the quarter-finals of the tournament in South Africa and now Gordon is eager for the centre-back to rejoin the club after Mensah enjoyed a successful loan spell last season.
The 27-year-old is currently contracted to Ligue 1 giants Lyon but has expressed his desire to return to Sunderland next season.
Manager Steve Bruce admits that a deal could easily become complicated following Mensah's stand-out performances in South Africa, plus the fact that Lyon are keen to engineer a permanent transfer rather than another loan deal.
Mensah has held talks on Wearside since his World Cup ended with a penalty shoot-out defeat to Uruguay and Gordon was quick to praise the former Genoa and Rennes defender for his 'outstanding performances'.
He said: "John had an outstanding World Cup.
"I don't know what stage the talks are at, but it would good to see him back the other day.
"He would certainly be welcomed back by the lads because when he played he was a big influence for us last season."
