The defender, who signed from Birmingham for £750,000 in January 2008, will stay with the Shrews until 4th January.

The 25-year-old spent the latter half of last season on loan at Stockport, where he made a total of 20 appearances.

Manager Graham Turner told Shrewsbury's official website: "He had a big money move from Birmingham but it hasn't worked out as he would have hoped so far.

"He had a spell at Stockport last season and did really well.

"I met Mat last Friday and was impressed with his determination and desire to play football.

"I think initially he didn't want to drop down a league but ultimately he was impressed with the ambition of the club to be successful and I look forward to working with him."
