The Magpies had earlier confirmed that they had agreed a fee with the Championship side for the 24-year-old.

The versatile Perch can play in a number of positions across the back and has also featured in midfield.

Perch was a product of Forest's youth academy before making 220 appearances for the Reds' senior team, scoring 12 goals.

Great addition

Newastle had been chasing the Mansfield-born player, who had one year left to run on his contract, for some time after having a bid rejected back in the January transfer window.

Toon boss Chris Hughton was delighted to have finally snapped up Perch, telling the club's official website: "James is a player I've admired for some time and it's great we've been able to secure his services.

"I'm certain he'll prove to be a great addition to our squad."

Perch is the Magpies' first major signing of the summer ahead of the new Premier League season.
