Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has undergone surgery to resolve his ongoing back problem.
The Italy international has been suffering from a slipped disc and lasted just 45 minutes of the Azzurri's woeful World Cup campaign, when he was forced off at half-time in their opener against Paraguay.
The 32-year-old had an operation in Milan on Sunday afternoon and a prognosis is expected to be determined on Monday.
"The necessity and the method of the operation, which have been programmed ahead, were confirmed by an ulterior consultation held this morning," read a statement on Juve's official website on Sunday.
"Tomorrow there will be an update with regards to the operation and the time necessary for recovery."
It is thought Buffon could miss up to four months, meaning he will miss the start of the new Serie A season.
Juve have already bought former AC Milan and Sampdoria goalkeeper Marco Storari this summer as extra cover for Buffon.
