New Portsmouth boss Steve Cotterill is confident striker David Nugent wants to remain at the club.
Nugent has struggled to settle at Fratton Park since joining from Preston for around £6million in 2007.
The forward has made just 34 league appearances since the move, scoring three goals, while he spent last season on loan at Burnley.
It was anticipated he would sign a permanent deal at Turf Moor, but Cotterill is hopeful the 25-year-old will now remain at Pompey.
He said in The News: "Nugent came in with a massive smile on his face on Thursday.
"David's a brilliant lad, who is going to play and score goals for us.
"He was the first one in on the first day of training, looking fit and refreshed.
"He has made a statement. Straight in and straight up to me. Different class. Maybe he just needs to be loved. That's what he needs.
"I've had a chat with him. Does he want to stay? Without a shadow of a doubt."
