Veteran agrees new contract

Hull City midfielder Nick Barmby has agreed to a coaching role at the club, but will also continue playing for the Tigers. The 36-year-old joined his hometown club in 2004, but despite his contract coming to an end this summer, new manager Nigel Pearson has offered Barmby a new deal. Barmby has enjoyed a well established career at the highest level, playing for Tottenham, Middlesbrough, Everton, Liverpool and Leeds in the Premier League, as well as winning 21 caps for England With his playing career winding down however, Barmby felt it was sensible to accept his new role, where he links up with former Boro team-mate Pearson, who moved to the KC Stadium from Leicester in June.

Desire

The veteran also stated his desire to give something back to Hull, with whom he has spent the longest spell of his career. "I sat down with Nige two or three days ago and he asked me to be a little more involved in the coaching side, but it doesn't take away that I'm still registered as a player. I still want to play," Barmby told Tigers Player "I'll still be a part of the squad and try and help the lads on the pitch as well. I've still got a desire to play football. I still feel I can contribute. "The coaching role is a sort of medium between the players and staff and I'll try and help the young lads with Stuart Watkiss and I'm looking forward to it. "He's asking me to gradually go that way, which is great for me because I'm obviously coming to the latter stages of my career and I've always said I'd like to put something back, especially here at a club like Hull City."
