Middlesbrough are poised to finalise a swoop for Nicky Bailey after agreeing a deal to sign the Charlton Athletic midfielder.
Bailey had been linked with a string of clubs since the end of last season following Charlton's failure to win promotion back to the Championship.
Norwich City and Southampton are understood to have made attempts to capture the 26-year-old, while Nottingham Forest and West Brom were also monitoring the situation.
However, Boro have won the chase for the former Southend United man after agreeing a deal with both the player and Charlton.
It is understood Boro will splash out £1.4million plus add-ons to land Bailey, who scored 26 goals during his two seasons with Charlton.
Bailey is still to undergo a medical on Teesside and he is expected to put the finishing touches to his move to The Riverside next week.
