Diego Maradona has revealed his admiration for Jose Mourinho and says he could call the new Real Madrid boss for advice.

Argentina struggled to qualify for the World Cup under Maradona but have made a stunning start to the tournament, winning all three Group B games to set up a clash with Mexico in the last 16.

Maradona's management style has nevertheless come under the spotlight, and there would appear to be a huge difference between his approach and the methodical nature of Mourinho.

However, the inexperienced Argentine has now declared that one option available to him is to contact the Portuguese coach, who guided Inter Milan to a treble last season, to discuss tactical issues.

"I like Mourinho a lot (as a coach)," Maradona said in an interview with Argentine daily La Nacion.

"On top of that, the way he received me, we spent hours talking about football, attacking and defensive tactics.

"He seemed to me a guy to take to your bedside table and ask him each time you need something.

"I've got his phone number, I might call him."

Maradona, however, insists he would not go as far as using the defensive strategy employed by Inter to get past Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

"No, not that. But it worked for him, right? He won the Champions League," said Maradona.

Maradona does not believe any player has come within 30 per cent of Messi's form at the World Cup, while he also had high praise for Carlos Tevez.

"I don't know if tomorrow people will say I'm arrogant but none was 30 per cent of Tevez either, because Carlitos thrills you playing... I love my team," he said.

Asked if Messi's tournament would compare with Maradona's 1982 finals in Spain, when he fell short of expectations, or if he was ready to emulate his performance in Argentina's 1986 victory in Mexico, he said: "I think he's there.

"I believe he's broken the mould and is ready, let's end the comparisons. Leo is ready to go out onto a pitch and leave it (the tournament) with the crown."
