German defender Heiko Westermann has snubbed a proposed move to Sunderland to stay at Schalke.
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce had targeted Westermann as one of his top summer transfer targets as he looks to bolster his defence.
Black Cats chairman Niall Quinn is believed to have travelled to Germany last week to try and thrash out a deal, but it appears the 26-year-old wants to stay at Schalke and play in the Champions League.
"I don't care whether Sunderland or any other club comes in for me - I want to stay with Schalke," Westermann told Germany's Kicker magazine.
"At the end of the day, we are playing in the Champions League next season and have high expectations.
"A transfer is not even a consideration for me."
