Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is hoping he will be able to recover from a back problem before the end of the World Cup.
Buffon is suffering from a slipped disc and he was forced out of Italy's opening game against Paraguay on Monday night at half-time.
He has already been ruled out of Sunday's next Group F fixture against New Zealand and is unlikely to be back for the final match of the first round against Slovakia.
Reports suggest that the Juventus No.1 may even struggle to play again in South Africa as no timescale has been set for his return.
Buffon accepts it will be difficult to overcome the injury in time to feature again at the World Cup, but is determined to play his part in helping the Azzurri reach a second consecutive final.
"I wish to recover, even if it's going to be hard," Buffon told Gazzetta dello Sport.
"But I must recover for Italy, I want to be in the final."
Federico Marchetti replaced Buffon during the 1-1 draw with Paraguay and is again likely to deputise against New Zealand in Nelspruit.
