Paul Peschisolido expects Aaron Webster to stay and fight for a new contract at Burton Albion.
Webster has not yet been offered a new deal at the Pirelli Stadium with the Brewers demanding to see more input from the 29-year-old defender.
"I'm getting some good feedback from the papers and on the web that he wants to stay at Burton and prove me wrong," said Burton boss Peschisolido.
"That's the kind of attitude that I wanted from him."
He added: "He's certainly got fantastic quality but his fitness levels aren't as good as they should be and I want to see some fight.
"I know he's very laid back and I don't mind that but I just want to see a little more desire."
