Defender agrees new three-year contract

Birmingham defender Liam Ridgewell has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2013. The 25-year-old enjoyed an impressive season with the Blues last term despite having to adapt his game to play at left-back. Ridgewell made 37 appearances in all competitions last term, helping the club finish ninth in their first campaign back in the Premier League. The defender's rise in prominence at St Andrews is all the more surprising when you consider he was signed from local rivals Aston Villa for £2million in summer 2007. Ridgewell has now played 113 times for Birmingham, scoring seven goals in the process and becomes the second player at the club to extend his contract after goalkeeper Maik Taylor penned new terms in May.
