Northampton boss Ian Sampson admits he is waiting to hear if he can re-sign Middlesbrough's John Johnson.
The full-back, who can also play in midfield, impressed hugely during a six-month stay at Sixfields last season.
And Sampson would love to sign him again, but Boro boss Gordon Strachan is ready to give the 21-year-old a chance to impress during pre-season.
"John's is a situation we will have to keep tabs on," said Sampson.
"He has another year left on his contract up there, and the manager has told him he wants to have a look at him in pre-season.
"So we will just have to play that one by ear."
